Parish and Town Councils operate as non-political bodies serving the community by dealing with local issues and working with the East Riding of Yorkshire Council to represent the concerns of the parish.
Councillors are elected every four years in local elections, the last election being May 2011. The Council employs a Clerk whose role is to ensure that the business of the Parish Council runs smoothly within the legal requirements laid down by Central Government and to carry out policy decisions of the council.
Regular monthly full council meetings are held along with various committees. The development Planning Highways & Safety Committee meets every three weeks, the Village Environment Committee meet every 6 weeks and the Arts, Publicity & Fundraising Committee meet quarterly. Details of meetings are also displayed on the Council notice boards situated at the corner of Hunter Road, Brough cross-roads (next to shops/traffic lights), Skillings Lane (to the front of Sainsbury’s car park), Welton Road (Centurion Way), Constable Way, Main Street (opposite the Half Moon) and on Welton Low Road (in the lay-by near the post box).
Members of the public are welcome to attend meetings. A Public Forum is held prior to the start of each meeting, where comments relating to matters on the agenda are taken first. Members of the Public should note that decisions cannot be made at meetings unless an item is already on the agenda. It should also be noted that members of the press and public may not speak when the Council is in session.
Committee Meetings are open to members of the press and public except for any specific item marked as a Confidential Session under the Public Bodies (Admission to Meetings) Act 1960, where the public/press would be asked to leave the room for the duration of the item.
